Why This System
VELFAC windows are specified by architects for their slim aluminium outer profiles and the warmth of the timber interior. The composite construction means two different materials meet at every frame reveal - the aluminium outer is robust and weather-resistant, while the timber inner requires the same careful treatment as any Nordic timber product.
VELFAC is one of the most commonly encountered premium timber-alu systems in the UK and Scandinavia. Orloffs clean them regularly - the approach is consistent: pure water on the aluminium outer, minimal moisture on the timber inner, and careful attention to the junction between the two materials where condensation and debris can accumulate.

The Orloffs Protocol
This is how I clean VELFAC windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for VELFAC systems.
Pro Tools
My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.
Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every VELFAC installation.
- 1
1. Identify the VELFAC system - slim aluminium outer with timber reveal on the inside
- 2
2. Rinse the aluminium outer with pure water top-to-bottom
- 3
3. Clean aluminium profiles with a damp cloth or non-abrasive pad - the slim profiles mark easily
- 4
4. Squeegee glass with care around the slim sightlines - rubber must track the edge cleanly
- 5
5. Wipe timber interior reveals with a barely damp microfibre - never allow drips onto the timber
Pro Tips
- VELFAC slim profiles mean less squeegee contact area at the edges - take extra care on the fan stroke
- The timber interior on VELFAC windows is often lacquered - even small water marks show. Keep it dry
- In Scandinavian conditions, check the drainage channels in the aluminium sill - pollen and debris block these in spring
What NOT To Do
- Do not use abrasive products on the slim aluminium outer profiles
- Do not allow cleaning solution to contact the timber interior
- Do not use solvent-based cleaners on any component

Frequently Asked Questions
Field Notes
โVELFAC windows appear frequently in UK new-build developments from the 2000s onward, particularly in housing designed to Nordic standards. In the UK, hard water areas mean mineral deposits build up on the glass faster than in Scandinavia. On London and southeast UK sites, incorporate a limescale treatment into the annual clean.โ
