Why This System

STEP-G is a materials supplier. The window cleaner's relevant knowledge is that STEP-G extrusions in European windows follow European powder coat and anodising standards - not the Japanese standards that apply to TOSTEM or YKK AP residential products. European STEP-G extrusions in commercial construction are subject to the same care protocols as any European commercial aluminium window. The Japan connection is corporate ownership, not a different material science.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean STEP-G windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for STEP-G systems.

Pro Tips

  • STEP-G profiles are not distinguishable from other European commercial aluminium by appearance - you will not know you are looking at a STEP-G extrusion unless the fabricator tells you. Apply standard European commercial aluminium care to all commercial aluminium you encounter in European projects

What NOT To Do

  • Do not use alkaline cleaners on anodised STEP-G profiles
  • Do not use abrasive pads on any profile finish
  • Do not use acidic cleaners on anodised profiles

Field Notes

โ€œIf a European commercial project uses STEP-G extrusions, the care protocol follows European commercial aluminium standards - Qualicoat powder coat or Qualanod anodising. The corporate parent being Japanese does not change the European finishing standard.โ€
