Why This System

Saint-Gobain India is the market reference for architectural glass quality. COOL-LITE and PLANISTAR coatings are widely specified on commercial buildings across India. For cleaners, this means encountering soft coatings that require coating-safe cleaning protocols on a large proportion of commercial glass surfaces.

Saint-Gobain solar control glass often carries soft coatings (applied via magnetron sputtering) on the inner surface of the outer pane in a double-glazed unit. These coatings are invisible, extremely effective, and permanently damaged by abrasives, acid-based products, or blades. India's climate adds dust, monsoon grime, and UV to the cleaning challenge.

Official Care Guidance

No official guide published. The steps below are based on Justin Orloff's 25 years hands-on experience with this system.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Saint-Gobain Glass India windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Saint-Gobain Glass India systems.

Pro Tools

My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.

1Ettore Squeegee 18"
2Unger HiFlo Pure Water Pole
3Moerman Liquidator
4Boab Belt System

Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every Saint-Gobain Glass India installation.

  1. 1

    1. Identify glass type before starting. Check the glass edge for Saint-Gobain etching marks indicating coating type.

  2. 2

    2. Never use scrapers or blades on coated Saint-Gobain glass.

  3. 3

    3. Pre-rinse to float off Indian dust loading.

  4. 4

    4. Apply coating-safe pH-neutral detergent - no acid, no alkali, no abrasive.

  5. 5

    5. Squeegee in overlapping strokes top to bottom; final detail with Liquidator at edges.

Pro Tips

  • COOL-LITE and PLANISTAR coatings are on the room-facing surface of the outer pane in an IGU - this surface is protected inside the unit and you will not touch it. The exterior surface is uncoated float glass and safe to clean normally. But if single glazed COOL-LITE is used (uncommon in newer builds), the coating is on the exterior and needs coating-safe products.
  • Chennai's high humidity and salt air (coastal proximity) means even uncoated glass carries salt deposits - dwell time with pH-neutral detergent before squeegeeing.
  • On commercial facades with Saint-Gobain glass, check silicone glazing tape condition and report any delamination.

What NOT To Do

  • Do not use razor blades on any Saint-Gobain coated glass.
  • Do not use acidic descalers on solar control glass.
  • Do not use abrasive pads on any Saint-Gobain product.
