Why This System

Between-the-glass blinds and shades are sealed inside the insulated glass unit at the factory. They cannot be cleaned - and they do not need to be. Window cleaners clean the exterior glass surface only. Never attempt to access the space between the panes. Pella fibreglass (Impervia) is one of the most durable window materials available. Fibreglass profiles are extremely resistant to UV, moisture, and temperature cycling - they do not expand and contract like vinyl, which means seals and hardware stay in alignment better over time. Pella wood windows (Reserve, Architect Series) have the same wood interior care requirements as Andersen 400 Series - wood interiors are not water-tolerant. The exterior aluminium cladding on clad-wood models is powder-coated and responds to the same protocol as any powder-coated aluminium.

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Pella Corporation windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Pella Corporation systems.

Pro Tips

  • Pella double-hung windows tilt in for cleaning. The tilt-wash pivot mechanism is at the base of each sash. Tilt gently and do not force - the sash pivot is a precision fit and forcing it damages the pivot pin housing.
  • On homes with between-the-glass shades, homeowners sometimes ask why the shades look uneven from outside. Shades that are partially raised or closed create an uneven appearance through the glass that is not a cleaning issue - clarify this on first visit to avoid follow-up calls.
  • Pella hardware is brand-specific and not interchangeable with competitor parts. If you identify a hardware fault, document the model and note it for the homeowner to contact Pella directly.

What NOT To Do

  • Do not attempt to open or clean between the panes on any between-the-glass blind or shade model
  • Do not use solvent, alkaline, or abrasive cleaning products on vinyl or fibreglass frames
  • Do not allow water to pool on wood interior surfaces
  • Do not use abrasive pads on powder-coated aluminium cladding
  • Do not spray cleaning solution into hardware mechanisms

Field Notes

β€œBetween-the-glass blind models are the most common Pella-specific question cleaners receive from homeowners. Explain clearly on the first visit that the blinds are sealed inside the glass unit and do not require cleaning - this prevents the expectation that you will clean them. Pella screens - Rolscreen retractable and standard fibreglass mesh - should be removed before glass cleaning. Retractable screens retract into the frame housing and are not removable in the field. Impervia fibreglass windows in sun-belt states hold up exceptionally well compared to vinyl. If a client is considering a product upgrade, the Impervia dimensional stability in extreme heat is worth mentioning.”
