Why This System
Powder-coated aluminium frames react to bleach, heavy-duty cleaners, and abrasive cloths - these compromise the finish over time and the damage builds up gradually. Bifold door systems have complex mechanical components - trolley wheels in top and bottom tracks, multi-point locking, hinges, and handles that need periodic silicone spray lubrication. Large-format glass panels at scale change how you work with a squeegee - lighter pressure, longer strokes, and one panel at a time to prevent soap water drying on adjacent panels. The 20-year guarantee explicitly excludes damage from negligent care or failure to follow Origin's maintenance instructions. Secured by Design hardware and PAS 24 certified components are precision mechanisms that aggressive cleaning can damage.
Step 1 of 2: Manufacturer Recommendations
Official Care Guidance
Source: ORIGIN GLOBAL CARE AND MAINTENANCE DOCUMENTATION
Glass
- Clean glass surfaces with a multipurpose cleaner or glass spray, then wipe with a multipurpose cloth or sponge from left to right and top to bottom.
- Use a squeegee to remove streaks, working from left to right and top to bottom.
- Clean windows on a cloudy day - the sun can prematurely dry the windows, leaving marks.
- Origin also suggests a homemade solution: 1 tablespoon of white vinegar with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in one cup of hot (not boiling) water.
Aluminium Frames
- Wipe frames with a non-abrasive cloth or sponge soaked in warm water and a mild household detergent suitable for metal surfaces.
- Paraffin-based cleaning solutions and non-abrasive liquid cream cleaners are suitable.
- Do not use bleach, heavy-duty household cleaners, or abrasive cloths - these compromise the powder-coat finish.
Hardware
- Origin doors contain mechanical moving parts that need periodic lubrication: hinges, multi-point lock, handles, and trolley wheels in the top and bottom tracks.
- Lubricate using silicone spray or grease. Wipe away excess with a non-abrasive cloth.
- Apply a small amount of silicone spray to the lock and key to keep the locking mechanism dust-free.
Gaskets, Tracks, and Drainage
- Clean gasket seals gently with a light, soapy solution and a non-abrasive cloth.
- Apply silicone spray to seals annually to keep them supple.
- Use a small brush to loosen debris from bifold and sliding door tracks, then vacuum with a thin attachment.
- Do not allow debris to build up in tracks - this directly affects door operation.
- Check drainage openings are clear to prevent water pooling inside the frame.
Marine and Coastal Environments
- In salt water environments, wash the external surface down with fresh water weekly.
- Salt deposits on aluminium frames must be removed before they cause surface damage.
- Cleaning frequency must increase significantly in hazardous environments.
Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol
The Orloffs Protocol
This is how I clean Origin Global windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Origin Global systems.
Pro Tools
My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.
Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every Origin Global installation.
- 1
Detail the frame first
Before touching the glass, wipe down the window frame edges with a damp microfibre cloth in mild soap water. This removes the dust, pollen, and grime sitting on the powder-coated frame.
When you run the squeegee across the glass, the rubber edge makes contact with the frame. If there is dirt on that frame, the squeegee picks it up and drags it across the clean glass as a streak. Clean the frame first. Every time.
For Origin bifold systems, wipe the visible frame sections between each panel. On a fully folded bifold configuration, there are multiple frame edges exposed - each one needs attention before squeegeeing.
- 2
Agitate the glass
Dip your T-bar applicator completely into the soap water on both sides. Apply the solution across the whole glass area using overlapping strokes. The idea is to dissolve the dirt so the squeegee can shave it away cleanly.
On Origin bifold doors with multiple panels, agitate one panel at a time. Do not agitate all panels at once - the soap water will dry on the first panels before you reach them with the squeegee. Never clean in direct sunlight.
- 3
Detail the frame again before squeegeeing
Once the glass is agitated, run a dry corner of your cotton rag along the top edge and both side edges of the panel. This removes the pooled soap water sitting on the frame. When the squeegee reaches those edges, it will not pick up dirty residue and drag it back across the glass.
- 4
The three squeegee turns
Side to side: start at the top edge of the panel with a dry rubber. Work across the glass in a straight horizontal line. Tilt the squeegee at a slight angle so the soap water spills from only one side of the channel. Wipe the rubber dry after each line. Overlap slightly into the next line down.
Top to bottom: same principle, but working down the glass in vertical lines. Start in the top corner with a dry rubber. Tilt to direct water to the lower side. Wipe the rubber dry after each line.
The J tune: the professional continuous motion. From the top of the panel to the bottom in one smooth, unbroken movement. Your thumb guides the rotation. When this is in your muscle memory, it is the fastest and most consistent turn for any panel size.
For Origin bifold systems, work one panel at a time. Use the side-to-side turn on individual panels and the J tune once you are confident with the motion.
- 5
Edge detailing
After squeegeeing, there is always a thin line of water along the bottom edge and at the sides. Take a dry cotton rag, fold it to a clean corner, and detail these edges in one smooth pass.
Get your finger into the edge where the glass meets the gasket seal. Remove any pooled soap water. If this is left to dry, it leaves a residue mark that shows up as soon as the sun hits the glass.
Rotate the rag so you are only ever touching the glass with a clean, dry section. Replace the rag with a fresh one every few panels.
- 6
Tracks, drainage, and hardware
For bifold and sliding systems, vacuum the bottom track with a thin attachment to remove grit and debris before wiping it down. Use a small brush to loosen stubborn debris first. Check that drainage openings in the frame are clear.
Apply silicone spray to hinges, multi-point locks, handles, trolley wheels, and gasket seals once per year. Wipe away any excess with a non-abrasive cloth.
Pro Tips
- Work one panel at a time on bifold systems. Do not let soap water dry on adjacent panels while squeegeeing the first.
- Clean the frame first, every time. Powder-coated frames pick up grime that the squeegee drags across the glass.
- Never use bleach or heavy-duty household cleaners on Origin's powder-coated surfaces - the 20-year guarantee depends on it.
- Vacuum bifold and sliding tracks at every cleaning session. Debris left in tracks damages trolley wheels and affects operation.
- Never clean in direct sunlight - the soap water dries before the squeegee reaches it, baking residue onto the surface.
What NOT To Do
- Do not use bleach on any surface - it damages the powder-coat finish.
- Do not use heavy-duty household cleaners on frames or glass - these compromise the powder-coat finish.
- Do not use abrasive cloths, scouring pads, or abrasive cleaning products on any surface.
- Do not use solvent-based cleaning products on gasket seals.
- Do not allow debris to build up in bifold or sliding door tracks - this directly affects door operation and can damage trolley wheels.
- Do not force water into track systems or hardware cavities.
- Do not clean glass in direct sunlight - the soap water dries before you can squeegee it off, leaving residue marks.
- Do not neglect maintenance in coastal or marine environments - salt deposits on aluminium frames cause surface damage if left.
- Do not skip annual hardware lubrication - mechanical moving parts need periodic attention.
