Why This System

Fibreglass and composite door materials expand and contract at a lower rate than timber, which makes them well-suited to Quebec's temperature swings - from -30C in January to +35C in July. The wood-grain finish on fibreglass door slabs is a textured paint surface, not a stain into the material. Abrasive tools and solvent-based cleaners remove this finish layer and it cannot be easily restored. Composite frame systems at the door perimeter include weatherstripping that compresses in cold temperatures. After winter, the first spring visit should include a check that the weatherstripping has returned to its full profile and is sealing correctly.

Official Care Guidance

No official guide published. The steps below are based on Justin Orloff's 25 years hands-on experience with this system.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Novatech Group windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Novatech Group systems.

Pro Tools

Pro Tips

  • On fibreglass doors with dark factory stain finishes, use a clean white cloth for the wipe-down - you can see whether the cloth is picking up any surface pigment, which indicates the cleaner is too aggressive
  • Test the door swing and lock on arrival, not after cleaning - if hardware is stiff before you start, document it; a client who discovers a stiff lock after a cleaning visit blames the clean
  • Spring visits to Quebec properties should always budget extra time - winter debris in threshold channels and door frames takes longer to clear than a standard warm-season visit

What NOT To Do

  • Do not use abrasive pads or scouring compounds on wood-grain fibreglass finishes - the grain texture is a surface coating
  • Do not use solvent-based, acetone, or strong citrus-oil cleaners on fibreglass or composite frames
  • Do not pressure-wash door frames - high pressure forces water past the frame perimeter seal and into the rough opening
  • Do not attempt to remove ice from seals or thresholds with metal tools or heat guns - allow natural thaw
  • Do not leave standing water at the door threshold in any season - in winter it freezes and forces the threshold seal

Field Notes

โ€œQuebec winters are among the harshest conditions for door hardware in the residential market. At the first spring visit, test the full open-lock-close sequence on every door. Hardware that worked in September may have stiffened through the winter. Wood-grain fibreglass door finishes in darker colours - particularly dark bronze and black - can fade unevenly if cleaned with anything other than a pH-neutral product. Document the finish condition at the first visit each year. Check the door sill threshold on spring visits. Snow and ice removal during winter often scratches aluminium threshold caps. A damaged threshold cap allows water infiltration into the subfloor - flag it to the client immediately.โ€
