Why This System
Every product is custom-manufactured to order in Kapfenberg - no standard sizes, no off-the-shelf units. 80%+ recycled aluminium content across the range - recycled content makes no difference to surface care rules. Wing XL is the world's largest frameless electric roof window - cleaning approach for angled, large-span, frameless glass differs from vertical casements. Powder-coated frames in 200+ RAL colours - powder coating scratches permanently with abrasive cloths and cannot be repaired without recoating. High-performance glazing achieving Passivhaus Ug values means Low-E and solar control coatings are standard - solvents and aggressive chemistry can attack outer coated surfaces.

Official Care Guidance

Glass
- Use mild soapy water and a soft cloth or professional applicator.
- No solvents of any kind.
- No ammonia - this rules out most commercial glass sprays.
- No bleach.
- No abrasive pads, steel wool, or scouring materials.
- No sharp tools or razor blades on the glass surface.
- No high-pressure water directed at frame joints, seals, or glass edges.
- For large-format panels and Wing roof windows, use a professional T-bar applicator to ensure even agitation across the full glass area.
Aluminium Frames (Powder Coated)
- Soft cloth and mild soapy water only.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue - dried soap film on powder coating leaves a visible mark.
- No solvents on powder-coated surfaces.
- No abrasives - powder coating scratches permanently.
- No pressure washers directed at frame joints or seals.
Hardware
- Oil all hinges, locking points, and moving hardware once per year with a light, acid-free machine oil.
- Do not over-oil - excess oil attracts dirt and grit that accelerates wear.
- For Wing series electric roof windows, hardware and drive mechanism maintenance must be handled by a Matauschek field service representative.
- Contact Matauschek via the service request form at matauschek.com/serviceanfrage to arrange hardware servicing.
Gaskets and Seals
- Inspect seals annually for compression, cracking, or shrinkage.
- Clean seals with a damp cloth only - no solvents or bleach on rubber seals.
- A silicone-based seal conditioner can be applied annually to maintain flexibility.
- Damaged or compressed seals should be replaced by the Matauschek service team.
Drainage Channels
- Inspect and clear drainage slots in the frame base twice per year.
- Blocked drainage causes water to pool inside the frame, accelerating seal degradation and causing visible water marks on the glass interior.
- Use a soft brush or compressed air to clear channels - no sharp tools.
Wing Roof Windows (Series-Specific)
- Clean Wing roof window glass from the interior where safely accessible, or use a water-fed pole system from outside.
- Do not press hard into the frameless glass-to-glass joins on Wing XL units.
- Electric drive mechanisms and rain/wind sensors must not be cleaned with water directly - wipe sensor surfaces with a dry soft cloth only.
- All Wing series electric hardware maintenance is handled by Matauschek service via matauschek.com/serviceanfrage.
Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol
The Orloffs Protocol
This is how I clean Manufaktur Matauschek windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Manufaktur Matauschek systems.
Pro Tools
My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.
Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every Manufaktur Matauschek installation.
- 1
Detail the frame edges first
Before touching the glass, wipe down the powder-coated aluminium frame edges with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soapy water. This removes accumulated dust, pollen, and urban grime sitting on the frame surface.
When the squeegee rubber makes contact with the frame at the edge of its stroke, any dirt on that frame surface gets picked up and dragged as a streak across the glass. Clean the frame first. Every time.
- 2
Agitate the glass
Dip your T-bar applicator fully into the soapy water and apply the solution across the entire glass area in overlapping strokes. On large-format Matauschek panels, work methodically from top to bottom - do not miss a section.
The goal of this step is to dissolve the bonded dirt from the glass surface so the squeegee can shave it away cleanly. If the dirt is not dissolved, the squeegee drags grit across the glass, leaving smears or micro-scratches. Take your time here.
Never clean in direct sunlight. On large-format glass, the solution dries in patches before you can squeegee it off, baking a residue film onto the surface that is harder to remove than the original dirt.
- 3
Detail the edges before squeegeeing
Once the glass is fully agitated, run a dry corner of your cotton rag along the top edge and both side edges. This removes pooled soap water from the frame ledges before the squeegee reaches them.
On large Matauschek panels, this step matters more than on a small casement - there is more edge length and more pooling. Doing this properly is the difference between a clean result and having to redo the whole pane.
- 4
The three squeegee turns
Side to side: start at the top of the pane with a dry rubber. Work in straight horizontal strokes across the glass. Tilt the squeegee so water spills from only one end of the channel. Wipe the rubber dry after each pass. Overlap slightly into the next line down.
Top to bottom: the same motion in vertical lines. Start in the top corner with a dry rubber. Tilt to direct water downward. Wipe dry after each pass. Overlap into the next line across.
The J turn: the professional continuous motion - from the top of the glass to the bottom in one unbroken movement. Your thumb guides the rotation at the end of each horizontal pass, turning the squeegee into the next line. The fastest and most consistent technique for large Matauschek panels once it is in muscle memory.
- 5
Edge detailing
After squeegeeing, there is always a thin water line at the bottom edge and at the sides. Fold a dry cotton rag to a clean corner and detail these lines in one smooth pass.
Get your fingertip into the edge where the glass meets the frame seal and remove any pooled water sitting there. Left to dry, that water leaves a mineral line that shows as soon as the sun hits the glass.
Always rotate the rag to a clean, dry section. Replace it with a fresh one after every few windows.
- 6
Wing roof windows
For Wing series roof windows, the angle of the glass changes the squeegee path. Work with the slope, not across it. Let gravity carry the water down the pane. Use a water-fed pole from outside where safe access requires it.
For the frameless glass-to-glass joins on the Wing XL, wipe the join line gently with a damp microfibre cloth - do not press hard. Avoid getting water into the electrical drive housing.
Pro Tips
- Identify the system before you start - Loft, Bionium, Johann, or Wing. Large-format and roof windows need a different approach than a standard casement.
- Clean the frame first, every time. Most streaks on Matauschek aluminium systems come from dirt the squeegee picks up at the frame edge.
- Never clean in direct sunlight - solution dries on large-format glass before squeegeeing is complete.
- Powder coat scratches permanently - no abrasive cloths, scouring pads, or steel wool on any Matauschek frame surface.
- Wing series electric hardware and drive mechanisms are a field service matter - do not attempt to clean or adjust them.
What NOT To Do
- No solvents on any Matauschek surface - glass, frame, seal, or hardware.
- No ammonia-based cleaning products. Most commercial glass sprays contain ammonia.
- No bleach on frames, seals, or glass.
- No abrasive cloths, scouring pads, or steel wool on powder-coated aluminium. The surface scratches permanently.
- No sharp tools or razor blades on glass surfaces.
- No high-pressure water directed at frame joints, seal lines, drainage channels, or glass edges.
- Do not clean in direct sunlight - solution dries before squeegeeing is complete, leaving residue baked onto the glass.
- Do not apply excess oil to hardware - it attracts grit and accelerates mechanical wear.
- Do not direct water at the electric drive housing or rain/wind sensors on Wing series roof windows.
- Do not press hard into frameless glass-to-glass joins on Wing XL units.
