Why This System

The timber-aluminium junction on Loewen clad windows is unique in Canadian manufacturing. The aluminium cladding is mechanically fixed over the timber frame with a designed gap to allow for timber movement with humidity and temperature change. Water sitting in this junction - from pressure washing, over-wetting the frame, or blocked drainage - wicks into the timber core and begins rot from the inside out. Loewen powder coat finishes are specified to high standards but they are applied over shaped aluminium profiles with corner radii and joints that collect cleaning product residue. Residue left in these joints discolours the finish over time and is difficult to remove without abrasion. Manitoba winters are extreme - temperatures regularly fall below minus 30 degrees Celsius. Freeze-thaw cycling through spring puts significant stress on all seal and junction points. The cleaning visit following the first spring thaw is the most important diagnostic visit of the year on Loewen windows.

Official Care Guidance

No official guide published. The steps below are based on Justin Orloff's 25 years hands-on experience with this system.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Loewen Windows windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Loewen Windows systems.

Pro Tools

My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.

1Ettore squeegee 18 to 22 inch
2Moerman Liquidator 2.0
3Pure water rinse pole
4Narrow track brush
5Separate microfibre cloths per material

Pro Tips

  • Keep a separate set of cloths for Loewen timber interiors - never use the same cloth on timber that has touched glass cleaning solution
  • On the spring visit, photograph every glazing seal bead, every cladding junction seam, and every piece of hardware before cleaning begins - this documents pre-existing winter damage and protects you from liability
  • Apply silicone lubricant to sliding tracks after every clean on lift-and-slide systems - Manitoba winters make metal tracks contract and bind, and a well-lubricated track is the difference between smooth operation and a damaged roller
  • If a Loewen casement or awning sash feels stiff to open, do not force it - cold or humidity may have caused the timber to swell slightly. Flag it to the homeowner rather than risk damaging the hinge arm

What NOT To Do

  • Do not pressure wash Loewen windows - high-pressure water forces moisture into the timber-aluminium junction and begins internal timber rot
  • Do not use acid-based glass cleaners near any timber or aluminium junction - acid attacks both materials
  • Do not use abrasive pads or steel wool on powder-coated aluminium cladding
  • Do not wet the interior timber frame - use barely damp cloths only and dry immediately
  • Do not leave cleaning solution residue in cladding joints or frame channels
  • Do not ignore glazing seal cracks after winter - on a Loewen triple-pane unit, a failed seal is an expensive replacement
  • Do not use solvent-based cleaning products on any part of a Loewen timber window

Can I use a water-fed pole on Loewen Windows windows?
Yes, purified water via a water-fed pole is one of the safest methods for Loewen Windows glass. Ensure TDS is at or near zero before use and avoid directing high-pressure water at seals or gaskets.

Field Notes

โ€œSchedule the first spring clean immediately after the final freeze-thaw cycle - this is the primary diagnostic visit for Loewen windows. Check every junction, seal, and cladding seam for winter damage before cleaning begins. Loewen windows are specified on high-value properties. Owners and architects are aware of the product and its value. Document any seal failures, cladding movement, or hardware issues on every visit - this protects you and builds trust with the client. The timber-aluminium junction is the single biggest risk point on any clad window in a Canadian climate. Never pressure wash. Never over-wet the frame. Always check drainage from the junction channel after cleaning. Large-format Loewen pivot and lift-and-slide panels can weigh significantly more than standard residential windows. Ensure hardware is moving freely before attempting to open for cleaning - forcing a stiff pivot or slide mechanism can damage the locking points.โ€
