Unclad timber is the most sensitive window frame material in our work. Water forced into joints, aggressive brushing or wrong cleaners all shorten the life of the finish. This is how I clean Lian Trevarefabrikk windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Lian Trevarefabrikk systems.

Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every Lian Trevarefabrikk installation.

1. Inspect all frame surfaces before starting - note any cracked paint, open joints or rot indicators

2. Rinse top-to-bottom with pure water at low pressure to clear dirt and debris

3. Clean frames with a soft brush and dilute neutral cleaner only - no alkaline or acidic products

4. Squeegee glass in overlapping strokes, keeping solution off the timber

5. Dry every frame surface with a clean microfibre - standing water on timber is unacceptable
Pro Tips
- If paint is flaking or joints are open, advise the owner before cleaning - water entry causes hidden rot
- Traditional Norwegian timber windows often have older glazing putty - clean gently around the glass edge
- Spring pollen can combine with moisture to create a sticky residue on painted surfaces - rinse fully before brushing
What NOT To Do
- Do not use a pressure washer at any setting on unclad timber frames
- Do not allow cleaning solution to sit on painted surfaces
- Do not use abrasive pads or scourers on any timber surface
