Why This System

Two frame systems with completely different care requirements - pure pine wood and aluminium-clad wood (GUTMANN). The glass technique is identical on both. The frame care is not. Jonas Vinduer uses finger-jointed pine finished with TEKNOS paint. On south or west-facing walls, dark-coloured pine frames may release resin in high sun - Jonas Vinduer note this is a natural characteristic, not a defect. The GUTMANN aluminium cladding is marketed as requiring no repainting for decades. That is true. But it is not maintenance-free - dirt, pollutants, and moisture still accumulate and must be removed correctly. Chemical damage explicitly voids the Jonas Vinduer product warranty. Their sale conditions state the warranty is invalid if damage results from incorrect maintenance or chemicals that affect the window profile. The five-year glass package warranty excludes cracks from improper assembly, thermal shock, or pressure differences - including high-pressure water against the sealed unit edges. Direct-to-consumer model with 50+ delivery points across Scandinavia - widely installed across Norway and Sweden, but without the local dealer care network of larger brands.

Step 1 of 2: Manufacturer Recommendations

Official Care Guidance

Source: JONAS VINDUER SALE AND DELIVERY CONDITIONS AND PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION (jonasvinduer.com). No dedicated care guide published - contact the Norway office in Sandnes for full maintenance instructions.

Glass

  • Clean with mild soapy water and a soft cloth or professional window cleaning applicator.
  • Do not use chemicals that could affect the glass package seals or window profiles.
  • Do not use high-pressure water directed at the glass edges or frame joints.
  • Do not use abrasive pads, steel wool, or sharp tools on the glass surface.
  • Thermal shock to glass (cold water on hot glass in direct sun) is excluded from warranty - avoid this.

Wood Frames - Scandinavian Standard and Euro-type

  • Clean with a soft damp cloth and mild soapy water.
  • Do not saturate pine frames with water - use a damp cloth, not a wet one.
  • Inspect the TEKNOS paint or varnish finish regularly. Cracking or peeling finish should be addressed before moisture penetration occurs.
  • On south or west-facing walls, dark-coloured pine frames may release resin under strong sun. This is a natural characteristic of the material, not a manufacturing defect.
  • Do not use solvents, ammonia-based products, or bleach on wood frame surfaces.

Aluminium-Clad Wood Frames - CORA / GUTMANN

  • The aluminium exterior requires no repainting or re-varnishing.
  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Rinse with clean water.
  • Do not use abrasive cloths, steel wool, or scouring pads on the aluminium surface.
  • Do not use solvents, ammonia, or aggressive cleaning agents on aluminium profiles.
  • Keep the profile clean to maintain its protective function over the timber core.

Hardware

  • Oil hinges, locking points, and moving parts regularly with a light machine oil.
  • Check hardware for correct alignment and function at least once per year.
  • Do not spray water directly at lock mechanisms or hinge joints.
  • Contact your installer or Jonas Vinduer for hardware adjustment if the window becomes stiff to open or close.

Gaskets and Seals

  • Wipe seals with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.
  • Do not use solvents or bleach on rubber gaskets - these degrade the rubber and shorten seal life.
  • Inspect seals annually for cracking, compression loss, or mould growth.
  • Replace damaged seals promptly to maintain weather and thermal performance.

Drainage Channels

  • Clear drainage slots and channels at the bottom of window frames at least twice per year.
  • Blocked drainage allows water to pool against seals and the timber core, leading to moisture damage.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Jonas Vinduer windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Jonas Vinduer systems.

Pro Tools

My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.

1T-bar applicator with a clean microfibre cover
2Professional squeegee with a fresh rubber blade
3Bucket with lukewarm water and one drop of pH-neutral dish soap per litre
4100% cotton towelling rags for edge detailing
5Soft microfibre cloth for frame wiping
6Separate cloths for wood and aluminium frame surfaces - avoid cross-contamination
7Light machine oil for annual hardware lubrication

Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every Jonas Vinduer installation.

  1. 1

    Detail the frame first

Before touching the glass, wipe the frame edges with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soapy water. Remove the built-up dust, pollen, and dirt sitting on the frame surface.

When the squeegee rubber reaches the frame edge, it picks up whatever is sitting there and drags it back across the glass as a streak. A clean frame before squeegeeing prevents most of those streaks. For pine wood frames, use a damp cloth rather than a wet one - pine absorbs water and excessive moisture works against the TEKNOS paint finish.

For CORA aluminium-clad frames, use a separate cloth from the one you use on any PVC or painted surfaces elsewhere on the property. This avoids transferring any solvent residue from other cleaning tasks onto the aluminium profile.

  2. 2

    Agitate the glass

Dip your T-bar applicator fully into the soapy water, making sure the microfibre cover is saturated on both sides. Apply the solution across the whole glass area in overlapping strokes, working from the top down.

The goal of this step is to dissolve and release the dirt from the glass surface so that the squeegee can shave it away cleanly. If dirt is not fully dissolved, the remaining grit gets dragged across the glass by the squeegee, causing smears or micro-scratches. Give the soapy water thirty seconds to work before you squeegee.

Never clean in direct sunlight. On a warm sunny day the soap water evaporates before you can squeegee it off, baking residue into the glass surface that is harder to remove than the original dirt.

  3. 3

Detail the frame edges before squeegeeing

After wetting the glass but before the first squeegee pass, run a dry corner of your cotton rag along the top edge and both vertical edges of the window. This removes the pooled soapy water sitting on the frame surface.

When the squeegee reaches those edges it will not pick up a pool of dirty water and drag it across the clean glass. This step takes ten seconds and prevents most residue marks.

  4. 4

    The three squeegee turns

Side to side: start at the top edge with a dry rubber. Work across the glass in a straight horizontal line. Tilt the squeegee so the soap water spills from one side only. Wipe the rubber dry after each pass. Overlap slightly into the next line down. Repeat to the bottom.

Top to bottom: the same principle working vertically. Start in the top corner with a dry rubber. Tilt to direct water downward. Wipe the rubber dry after each pass. Overlap into the next column across. Repeat to the bottom edge.

The J tune: the continuous professional motion from top to bottom in one smooth, unbroken movement. Your thumb guides the rotation - as you reach the end of a horizontal pass, rotate your wrist so the squeegee turns and continues down. When this is in your muscle memory, it is the fastest and most consistent turn for any window size, and it produces the cleanest result on the larger triple-glazed units Jonas Vinduer sells.

  5. 5

    Edge detailing

After squeegeeing, there is always a thin water line along the bottom edge and at both sides. Take a dry cotton rag, fold it to a clean corner, and detail these edges in one smooth pass.

Work your finger into the edge where the glass meets the frame seal. Remove any pooled soapy water sitting in that channel. Left to dry, this residue marks the glass when the sun hits it. Rotate the rag to a dry section after every few windows.

  6. 6

    Hardware and annual maintenance

Oil all hinges, locking points, and turn mechanisms once per year with a light machine oil. On Jonas Vinduer's tilt-and-turn and top-swing models, check that the window closes fully against the seal with even contact around the whole perimeter. If the window feels stiff or does not close flush, contact your installer rather than forcing the hardware.

Pro Tips

  • Identify the frame material before you start - pure pine or CORA aluminium-clad. Frame care is different for each and chemical damage on either one can void the warranty.
  • Pine frames: use a damp cloth, not a wet one. Pine absorbs water and saturating the frame works against the TEKNOS paint finish.
  • Keep separate cloths for wood and aluminium surfaces - avoid transferring any residue from one material to the other.
  • Chemical cleaning products that damage the profile void the Jonas Vinduer warranty explicitly. Mild soapy water only on all frame surfaces.
  • Never apply cold water to glass that has been heated by strong direct sunlight - thermal shock is excluded from the five-year glass package warranty.
  • Dark-coloured pine frames on sun-exposed walls may release resin in hot weather. Remove fresh resin with white spirit on a cloth, keeping the solvent away from glass seals.

What NOT To Do

  • Do not use chemicals that affect the window profile - this explicitly voids the Jonas Vinduer product warranty.
  • Do not use solvents on any Jonas Vinduer frame surface.
  • Do not use ammonia-based cleaning agents - this rules out most commercial glass sprays.
  • Do not use bleach on frame surfaces or seals.
  • Do not use abrasive cloths, steel wool, or scouring pads on glass, wood, or aluminium surfaces.
  • Do not use sharp tools or razor blades on glass or frame surfaces.
  • Do not direct high-pressure water at glass edges, frame joints, seals, or hardware.
  • Do not saturate pine wood frames with water - use a damp cloth, not a wet one.
  • Do not clean glass in direct sunlight.
  • Do not apply cold water to glass that has been heated by strong direct sunlight - thermal shock is excluded from the glass package warranty.
  • Do not attempt to adjust hinges, frames, locks, or other hardware yourself if the window is stiff or misaligned. Contact your installer.
