Why This System
Jansen profiles are specified at the luxury end of the market where architectural intent is primary. A cleaning error visible on a JANISOL installation in a heritage building or a contemporary luxury property is a serious professional incident. JANISOL Arte profiles are designed to replicate original inter-war steel window dimensions. In heritage renovation projects, Jansen Arte profiles sit alongside original steel windows from the 1920s and 1930s. The new and old profiles must not be confused - original windows may need conservation treatment, new Jansen profiles need standard premium steel cleaning protocol. Stainless steel options in the Jansen range provide corrosion resistance in demanding environments. Stainless steel cleans differently from powder-coated steel - no paint layer to protect, but the stainless surface itself resists corrosion. Cleaning products appropriate for stainless steel must be verified before use. VISS structural glazing creates an all-glass facade appearance with minimal visible frame. The visible aluminium or steel elements of VISS are bonded structural components - any cleaning damage to these elements affects the structural integrity of the facade system. Jansen systems are fabricated by specialist steel window companies rather than standard window fabricators. The fabrication tolerance and finish quality are significantly higher than mid-range window products. Cleaning standards must match this quality level.

Official Care Guidance
Source: ORLOFFS PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE - BASED ON JANSEN PUBLISHED INFORMATION AND 25 YEARS FIELD EXPERIENCE
Glass
- Lukewarm water with mild dish soap or a purpose-made glass cleaner verified for use on premium installations.
- Microfibre T-bar applicator on wash, professional squeegee on pull. Fresh rubber on every job.
- On VISS structural glazing, keep all cleaning products away from structural silicone bonds between glass and steel frame.
- No razor blades on any Jansen glazing without confirming glass specification and coating type with the client or the original fabricator.
Frames
- Identify the steel finish before selecting any product: powder coat or stainless steel.
- Powder-coated steel: pH-neutral cleaner on a soft cotton cloth only. No abrasive. Dry immediately.
- Stainless steel: verified stainless-safe cleaner, no chlorine-containing products. Dry immediately and completely.
- Never leave any moisture on any Jansen steel profile surface.
Hardware
- Wipe all hardware with a soft damp cloth and dry completely. Steel pivot hardware in Jansen systems is high-precision and moisture-sensitive.
- Lubricate pivot hinges and locking points annually with a light machine oil or a lubricant specified for precision steel hardware.
- Do not apply lubricant near VISS structural silicone bonds.
Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol
The Orloffs Protocol
This is how I clean Jansen windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Jansen systems.
Pro Tools
My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.
Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every Jansen installation.
- 1
Pre-work assessment and documentation
On first visit to any Jansen installation, document the full window condition with photographs. Record any pre-existing scratches, corrosion spots, or hardware issues.
Identify whether the installation is JANISOL, JANISOL Arte (heritage), JANISOL PAROS, or VISS. The VISS system requires specialist facade cleaning access, not standard window cleaning technique.
In heritage projects, clearly identify which steel windows are new Jansen profiles and which are original inter-war windows requiring a different approach.
- 2
Glass wash
Apply soap solution with T-bar. Gentle agitation only - no scrubbing on any glass adjacent to Jansen frame elements.
On VISS facade elements, keep solution entirely on the glass surface and away from the structural silicone bonds at the frame edge.
Dwell 30 to 60 seconds on any soiling.
- 3
Edge detail
Cotton cloth along the glass edge before squeegeeing. On Jansen slim profiles, the rebate is narrower than on any other profile type - a careful cloth edge is essential.
On JANISOL Arte profiles, the rebate face width is extremely narrow. Work precisely to keep cloth moisture off the profile face during this step.
Dry the top profile rail before squeegeeing.
- 4
Squeegee
Cut in at the top corner with precision. On slim Jansen profiles, the rubber tip must be angled accurately to prevent the squeegee channel striking the profile face.
Wipe rubber on a lint-free cloth after every pass.
Finish with a bottom edge pass. Remove all moisture from the glass before it can run onto the profile face.
- 5
Profile wipe-down
Apply the verified cleaner to a lint-free cotton cloth - never directly to the profile. Wipe the profile face in one direction and dry immediately with a second lint-free cloth.
On stainless steel profiles, dry completely and buff with a clean dry lint-free cloth to remove any cloth marks.
Inspect for any new scratches or marks after the clean. Photograph if found and report to the client.
- 6
Hardware and corrosion inspection
Dry all hardware completely with a lint-free cloth.
With a torch, inspect all concealed frame corners, fixing points, and the sill channel for any moisture accumulation or early corrosion.
At the annual service, apply precise lubrication to pivot hinge points and locking mechanisms.
Pro Tips
- On Jansen JANISOL Arte heritage installations, take 2 minutes at the start of every visit to confirm which profiles are new Jansen and which are original. Apply the conservation or cleaning protocol appropriate to each.
- Stainless steel Jansen profiles must be dried completely and buffed dry after cleaning. Any water left on stainless steel leaves a mineral deposit that is visible on the bright surface and requires re-cleaning.
- On VISS structural glazing, the structural silicone bonds are the most critical element in the installation. Never use any solvent-based product near them. Even standard cleaning products can affect structural silicone if they enter the bond interface.
- Pre-clean and post-clean photography on luxury Jansen installations is professional practice, not over-caution. It protects you if a pre-existing condition is noticed after your visit and provides the client with a condition record.
- The squeegee channel should not contact Jansen profile faces during the clean. If your technique routinely allows the channel to hit the frame, adjust your cut-in angle or use a smaller channel on the initial pass near the frame.
- Lint-free cloths are essential on Jansen stainless and dark powder-coat profiles. Standard cotton cloths can leave fibres on a stainless surface that are visible under certain lighting conditions.
- Clients who have specified Jansen profiles have high aesthetic expectations. End every clean with a final walk-around inspection in the same light conditions as the client will view the windows from inside the building.
What NOT To Do
- Do not use any abrasive material of any kind on Jansen profile surfaces.
- Do not apply solvent-based products near VISS structural silicone bonds.
- Do not use chlorine-containing products on stainless steel Jansen profiles.
- Do not leave any moisture on any steel profile surface after cleaning.
- Do not treat new Jansen Arte profiles with the conservation or restoration approach appropriate to original inter-war steel windows.

Glass: 4x to 12x per year (Luxury and commercial installations typically specify monthly or quarterly cleans. Heritage projects: discuss with the conservation team.). Profiles: Same schedule as glass (Steel profiles on Jansen installations are inspected at every clean.). Corrosion inspection: Every clean (A 5-minute torch inspection at every visit is the most important maintenance act on any steel window system.). Hardware lubrication: Once per year minimum (More frequently on high-use door hardware. Precision steel pivot hardware needs regular attention.)

Field Notes
โJansen is the most demanding manufacturer brand to work on in the European window market. The combination of precision profiles, luxury context, heritage sensitivity, and stainless steel options means that every decision on a Jansen installation requires more thought than on any other product. JANISOL Arte profiles in heritage renovation projects are a specialist category within a specialist category. Before accepting this work, be honest about whether your training, tools, and experience level are appropriate. The pre-clean and post-clean documentation habit is more important on Jansen installations than anywhere else. Pre-existing scratches or corrosion spots that are noticed after your visit will be associated with your work unless you have photographic evidence of their pre-existence.โ
