Why This System

heroal roller shutter housings sit directly above the window opening and accumulate debris that falls onto the glass during operation. Cleaning the glass without addressing the housing first means the glass is re-dirtied during the first shutter operation after cleaning. External venetian blind blades on heroal VS systems accumulate identical soiling to the glass but in a different texture - the aluminium blade surface needs a specific cleaning approach distinct from both glass cleaning and frame cleaning. heroal's integrated product range means windows and sun protection systems are matched in both profile design and powder-coat finish. Cleaning damage to one component is visually obvious against the matched adjacent component. Motorised roller shutter systems from heroal have control motors in the housing that are accessible via a service cover. Cleaning solution must never enter the housing through the shutter slot at the base of the housing. heroal aluminium profiles are thermally broken and carry a powder-coat finish. The same aluminium powder-coat care protocol applies as to any other premium aluminium system - no abrasives, no alkaline or acidic products, immediate drying.

Step 1 of 2: Manufacturer Recommendations

Official Care Guidance

Source: ORLOFFS PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE - BASED ON HEROAL PUBLISHED INFORMATION AND 25 YEARS FIELD EXPERIENCE

Glass

  • Clean glass only after the shutter housing above has been cleaned. Otherwise debris from the housing falls onto the clean glass.
  • Lukewarm water with mild dish soap or glass cleaner. Microfibre T-bar, professional squeegee with fresh rubber.
  • Keep solution away from the roller shutter slot at the base of the housing directly above the window.
  • No razor blades unless coating type confirmed.

Frames

  • pH-neutral cleaner on a soft cloth. Safe on powder-coated aluminium.
  • No alkaline or acidic products - both attack powder coat over multiple applications.
  • No abrasive pads or cloths on powder-coated aluminium surfaces.
  • Dry all aluminium frame surfaces immediately after cleaning.

Hardware

  • Wipe exposed hardware with a damp cloth and dry immediately.
  • Do not allow lubricant or cleaning product to enter roller shutter housing via the blade slot.
  • Lubricate tilt-and-turn mechanisms and hinge points on window hardware annually.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Heroal windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Heroal systems.

Pro Tools

My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.

1Microfibre T-bar applicator
2Professional squeegee, 35 cm channel
3pH-neutral aluminium frame cleaner
4Soft-bristle brush
5Venetian blade cleaning tool
6Lint-free cloths
7Light machine oil

Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every Heroal installation.

  1. 1

    Sequence planning

On heroal integrated installations, always work top to bottom: shutter housing first, window frame second, glass last.

Check whether motorised shutters are present. Locate the motor access panel and check its seal condition before wetting anything above.

Lower venetian blind blades to horizontal position before starting any cleaning - blades raised during cleaning are re-dirtied by overspray.

  2. 2

    Shutter housing clean

Brush the housing face and the blade exit slot with a dry soft brush. Remove all loose debris before any moisture is applied.

Wipe the housing exterior face with a damp cloth and pH-neutral cleaner. Dry immediately.

Do not introduce water into the blade slot. The motorised drive and guide rails are inside the housing.

  3. 3

    Glass wash

Apply soap solution with T-bar in overlapping passes.

Do not allow solution to run up behind the top window frame into the shutter slot above.

Dwell 30 to 60 seconds on soiled areas.

  4. 4

    Squeegee and edge detail

Edge cloth pass along the glass perimeter before squeegeeing.

Side-to-side passes from the top. Keep rubber clean between passes.

    Finish with a bottom-edge pass.

  5. 5

    Window frame wipe-down

pH-neutral cleaner on a soft cloth. Work top to bottom. Rinse, dry with lint-free cloth.

On matched-finish installations, the window frame and shutter housing face are the same colour. Use the same cloth technique on both.

Clear drainage slots in the window frame base.

  6. 6

    Venetian blade cleaning

With blades in horizontal position, wipe both faces of each blade with a damp cloth or blade cleaning tool. Work from top to bottom.

Rinse blades with a damp clean cloth. Do not allow water to accumulate on the blade pivot mechanism at the blade ends.

Raise blades to vertical (closed) position after cleaning is complete.

Pro Tips

  • On heroal integrated installations, the sequence matters more than the product. Clean the housing, then the frame, then the glass. Reversing this sequence adds rework.
  • Motorised shutter housings should never be operated during cleaning. Ensure the shutter is in the fully raised position and remains there for the duration of the glass clean.
  • External venetian blind blades accumulate more soiling on the upper face than the lower face. If time is limited, prioritise the upper blade face.
  • Matched powder-coat finishes on heroal window frames and shutter housings mean that any product that discolours the window frame will be immediately visible against the unmarked housing. Test new products away from matched-finish installations.
  • The blade slot at the base of the housing is the most critical exclusion zone on a heroal installation. Tape over the slot with masking tape during high-pressure glass cleaning if there is any risk of solution entering.
  • Aluminium roller shutter blades on heroal R systems can also be wiped down with a damp cloth during a full-service clean. The blade surface is the same powder-coated aluminium as the window frame.
  • On heroal installations in areas with high pollen or organic debris, the shutter housing slot accumulates organic matter that can stain the top of the glass when the shutter is operated. Clearing the slot at every clean prevents this staining.

What NOT To Do

  • Do not clean glass on heroal integrated installations before cleaning the shutter housing above.
  • Do not allow water or cleaning product to enter the roller shutter blade slot.
  • Do not use abrasive materials on powder-coated aluminium window frames or shutter housing faces.
  • Do not operate motorised shutters during cleaning.
  • Do not use alkaline or acidic products on powder-coated aluminium surfaces.

Cleaning Frequency

Glass: 2x to 4x per year (Premium German residential specification typically includes quarterly cleaning contracts.). Shutter housing: Same schedule as glass (Clean the housing at every glass clean - the two are inseparable on heroal installations.). Venetian blades: 2x per year minimum (Spring and autumn. More frequently in high-soiling environments.). Window hardware lubrication: Once per year (Annual service on tilt-and-turn mechanisms and hinge points.)

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean Heroal windows?
For Heroal windows, Glass: 2x to 4x per year (Premium German residential specification typically includes quarterly cleaning contracts.). Can I use a water-fed pole on Heroal windows?
Yes, purified water via a water-fed pole is one of the safest methods for Heroal glass. Ensure TDS is at or near zero before use and avoid directing high-pressure water at seals or gaskets.

Field Notes

โ€œheroal integrated installations require more time per window than standard window-only cleans. The shutter housing clean and venetian blade clean add 3 to 5 minutes per window opening. Price accordingly. The shutter slot water exclusion rule is the single most important protocol on heroal motorised installations. A motor damaged by cleaning water is a several-hundred-euro repair that falls on the cleaning contractor. Matched-finish powder-coat surfaces on heroal products mean that a substandard frame clean is immediately visible when the client looks at the window against the housing. Standards need to be consistent across every surface on these installations.โ€
