Why This System

No other window environment combines geothermal mineral deposits, volcanic ash, Atlantic salt and subarctic UV in the same building. GK Gluggar frames are built to survive this - but cleaning them requires understanding each of these deposit types and treating them correctly. Standard Scandinavian cleaning protocols are not enough for Icelandic conditions.

Iceland is a specialist environment. Geothermal water leaves silica and mineral scale on glass that standard glass cleaner cannot remove. Volcanic ash is abrasive - wiping dry ash scratches glass instantly. Atlantic salt crystallises in rebates and around fixings. At Orloffs we treat Icelandic windows as a distinct cleaning challenge with dedicated pre-rinse steps and appropriate scale removal products.

Official Care Guidance

No official guide published. The steps below are based on Justin Orloff's 25 years hands-on experience with this system.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean GK Gluggar windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for GK Gluggar systems.

Pro Tools

My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.

1Ettore Squeegee 14"
2Unger HiFlo Pure Water Pole
3Moerman Liquidator
4Boab Belt System

Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every GK Gluggar installation.

  1. 1

    1. Assess glass and frame surface - identify mineral scale, ash residue or salt deposits before touching the glass

  2. 2

    2. Flood the glass surface with pure water to lift any ash - never wipe dry or partially dry ash

  3. 3

    3. Apply specialist mineral/limescale remover to glass if geothermal scale is present - allow dwell time

  4. 4

    4. Rinse frames thoroughly to clear salt crystallisation from rebates and fixings

  5. 5

    5. Squeegee glass and detail frames and sills - inspect for salt corrosion around fixings and report to owner

Pro Tips

  • Volcanic ash is silica-based - one dry wipe scratches glass permanently. Always flood first
  • Geothermal scale builds fastest on south and west faces where hot spring humidity is highest - plan extra time
  • After Atlantic storms, check drainage channels and sill weep holes - salt blockages cause water ingress

What NOT To Do

  • Do not wipe volcanic ash from glass before flooding with water
  • Do not use standard glass cleaner on geothermal mineral scale - it will not remove it
  • Do not ignore salt crystallisation around fixings - report it as a maintenance issue

Field Notes

โ€œGK Gluggar aluminium windows are designed for high wind loads - the frames are robust, but the seals and fixings are under constant stress in exposed Icelandic locations. A cleaning visit is a good opportunity to check seal condition and report any concerns. Some Icelandic commercial buildings near geothermal activity may need monthly glass maintenance.โ€
