Why This System
The Calgary chinook effect creates thermal cycles that no other Canadian city experiences at the same frequency and magnitude. A window frame that is at minus 20 degrees Celsius at breakfast can be at plus 10 by lunchtime - and back to minus 15 by midnight. This is extreme stress on frame corner welds, glazing unit seals, and weatherstripping that plays out multiple times per winter. Chinook wind events carry fine prairie dust at speed - this dust loads window tracks, abrades frame surfaces, and works into glazing seal perimeters. Track cleaning after a chinook event is as important as track cleaning after a snowfall. The Rockies generate intense UV at Calgary's altitude - approximately 1,048 metres above sea level. uPVC yellowing and seal degradation happen faster at Calgary altitude than at lower-elevation Prairie cities.

The Orloffs Protocol
This is how I clean Gienow Windows & Doors windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Gienow Windows & Doors systems.
Pro Tools
My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.
Pro Tips
- In Calgary summer, start window cleaning very early - glass that has been in direct sun for two hours will dry cleaning solution before you can squeegee it
- Ask Calgary clients if they had significant chinook events since the last clean - this helps you assess whether a standard track clean or a more thorough track clearance is appropriate
What NOT To Do
- Do not skip track cleaning after chinook events - wind-driven prairie dust is highly abrasive
- Do not leave cleaning solution on glass or frames in Calgary summer sun - it dries and bakes fast
- Do not use abrasive pads on uPVC or aluminium
- Do not use solvent-based products on uPVC

Field Notes
โCalgary clients should be advised to book cleaning after major chinook sequences - not just in spring. Repeated chinook dust loading between autumn and spring creates a track debris build-up that is beyond the scope of a standard spring clean. Calgary altitude UV is significantly more intense than Edmonton or Saskatoon. Schedule cleaning in early morning where possible - cleaning solution dries extremely fast on glass that has been in direct summer sun.โ
