Why This System

Fenplast's uPVC profiles are manufactured with UV stabilisers suited to Quebec's four-season UV exposure - lower average UV than tropical markets but with significant summer intensity and the added stress of UV reflection off winter snow. The commercial aluminium systems use thermal breaks - an insulating barrier within the aluminium profile that separates the cold exterior face from the interior. Thermal break aluminium requires different cleaning awareness at the frame junction than standard aluminium. Eastern Canadian frost accumulates on and around window frames during winter. When it thaws, it carries dirt, mineral deposits, and organic matter into the frame drainage channels. Spring cleaning in Quebec is heavier work than a standard maintenance visit.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Fenplast windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Fenplast systems.

Pro Tips

  • Carry a torch on Quebec spring visits - weep holes in the bottom frame sections of Quebec windows are often partially hidden by frost residue, and a torch lets you confirm they are clear without probing blindly
  • On Montreal commercial work, photograph the frame perimeter sealant condition at the start of the spring visit - this is documentation that the cracking was pre-existing, not caused by the clean
  • uPVC frames in Quebec benefit from a wipe of a UV-protective cream applied after cleaning on exposed south-facing elevations - it is an upsell that has a real service life impact

What NOT To Do

  • Do not use abrasive pads or scouring compounds on uPVC frames - scratches are permanent and trap dirt
  • Do not use solvent-based cleaners on uPVC profiles
  • Do not use acidic cleaners on powder-coated or anodised aluminium frames
  • Do not pressure-wash frame perimeters - Quebec freeze-thaw loosened sealant fails immediately under pressure washing
  • Do not skip weep hole clearing in spring - blocked drainage causes water pooling and ice formation in the following winter

What should I avoid on Fenplast windows?
Do not use abrasive pads or scouring compounds on uPVC frames - scratches are permanent and trap dirt

Field Notes

โ€œMontreal road salt is carried by winter traffic onto building facades and window frames. The spring visit should include a deliberate rinse of all exposed aluminium surfaces before cleaning - salt residue is mildly corrosive on both powder-coat and anodised aluminium over time. Quebec commercial buildings with Fenplast curtain wall systems often have inaccessible lower frame sections behind landscaping. These sections accumulate debris and miss regular cleaning - include them explicitly in the service scope. After a Quebec ice storm, check all window hardware for ice infiltration before testing the mechanism. Forcing a locked handle on an ice-seized mechanism strips the locking cam.โ€
