Why This System
EgoKiefer products are built to Swiss Minergie energy standard on premium series - the triple glazing, multi-stage seals, and hardware precision reflect a performance specification significantly above standard European residential windows. The timber-aluminium Ego Classic range uses Swiss joinery techniques on the inner timber frame - the finish quality on the timber inner face is higher than on most imported timber-alu systems. Swiss buildings experience significant temperature differential between summer and winter - EgoKiefer products are designed for this range, and the expansion and contraction of materials across the season is factored into the frame design. EgoKiefer uses a multi-stage sealing system on premium series - typically three seal lines between sash and outer frame. More seals means more seal surface to clean around and more seal integrity to monitor. The Swiss residential market has high expectation of long-term product quality - EgoKiefer installations are typically expected to last 40 years, which means the maintenance window for these products is longer than for standard European windows.
Step 1 of 2: Manufacturer Recommendations
Official Care Guidance
Source: ORLOFFS PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE - BASED ON EGOKIEFER PUBLISHED INFORMATION AND 25 YEARS FIELD EXPERIENCE
Glass
- Lukewarm water with mild soap or a dedicated glass cleaner. No ammonia-based products - they attack adjacent EPDM seals and PVC foil edges.
- Microfibre T-bar on the wash, professional squeegee on the pull. Fresh rubber blade - triple-glazed Minergie units are larger and heavier than standard residential glass and worn rubber leaves marks across the panel.
- No razor blades without confirming the glass specification. EgoKiefer Minergie-spec glazing carries low-E coatings as standard. Check before using any hard tools on the glass.
- Direct the squeegee bead away from the multi-stage seal perimeter. Solution sitting against the compression seal between squeegee passes degrades the seal surface over repeated cleans.
Frames
- PVC series: damp cloth with pH-neutral cleaner. No bleach, no solvent, no ammonia. Rinse thoroughly.
- Ego Classic timber-alu: aluminium outer face with pH-neutral cleaner and damp cloth; timber inner face with barely damp cloth, dried immediately.
- Ego Alu aluminium: pH-neutral aluminium-safe cleaner on a damp cloth. Dry immediately to prevent mineral deposits from hard water on the frame surface.
- Clear drainage slots at the frame base at every clean - the Swiss climate means significant condensate volumes in winter and the drainage slots work hard.
Hardware
- Wipe all hardware with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Check all locking points by operating the handle through the full range at each visit.
- Lubricate all moving points annually - hinges, tilt-and-turn mechanisms, espagnolette rods, and on sliding systems, the track running gear.
- On multi-point locking hardware (common on Swiss-spec windows), all locking points should engage with the same resistance. If one point is stiffer than the others, lubricate and report if it does not improve.
Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol
The Orloffs Protocol
This is how I clean EgoKiefer windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for EgoKiefer systems.
Pro Tools
My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.
Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every EgoKiefer installation.
- 1
Material identification
Identify the frame material on each window or door - PVC, timber-aluminium (Ego Classic), or aluminium (Ego Alu). The cleaning sequence differs for each. Do not start until you know what you are cleaning.
On Ego Classic timber-alu, confirm which face is aluminium (outer) and which is timber (inner). This is obvious visually but confirm on each window - some EgoKiefer installations mix different series on the same elevation.
Check the glass specification if possible. Minergie-certified glazing carries low-E coating as standard. Note this before starting and adjust tool selection accordingly.
- 2
Pre-clean inspection
Check all drainage slots at the base of the frame and sash. The Swiss climate means more condensate volume than in milder climates - drainage slot blockages are more frequent than on windows in lower-humidity environments.
Inspect the multi-stage seal perimeter on premium EgoKiefer series. Three seal lines means three inspection lines. Note any seal that is flat, lifted, or cracked before washing starts.
On Ego Classic installations, check the alu-timber junction at the frame perimeter. Any sign of water ingress or paint lifting near this junction needs to be flagged before cleaning begins.
- 3
Glass wash
Apply soap solution with the microfibre T-bar. On large-format Minergie triple-glazed panels, the glass area is substantial - work in overlapping passes and allow full coverage before the squeegee phase.
On Ego Classic, keep solution off the timber inner frame face during the glass wash. Work the T-bar on glass only and dry any solution that reaches the timber immediately.
On EgoKiefer sliding systems (Ego Comfort), keep solution out of the track channel during the wash phase. Solution in the track mixes with the track lubricant and creates a gritty paste that wears the threshold seal.
- 4
Edge detail
Run a damp cloth along the rebate edge before squeegeeing. On PVC EgoKiefer frames, the rebate is standard depth. On Ego Alu slim-profile frames, the rebate is shallower and the edge detail is quicker.
On Ego Classic, dry the timber rebate edge before squeegeeing - do not allow solution to sit on the painted timber at the glass edge even briefly.
On the multi-stage seal perimeter, wipe the outermost seal face gently with a barely damp cloth at the edge detail stage. Do not apply cleaner to the seal directly.
- 5
Squeegee and frame wipe
Squeegee glass with fresh rubber. On wide Minergie panels, a 45 cm channel reduces the number of passes needed and produces a more consistent result than a standard 35 cm channel.
Frame wipe according to material: PVC with pH-neutral cleaner and damp cloth; Ego Classic aluminium outer with pH-neutral cleaner, timber inner with barely damp cloth dried immediately; Ego Alu with pH-neutral aluminium-safe cleaner dried immediately.
On all EgoKiefer frames, pay attention to the welded or joinery corners - grime accumulates in frame corners and is commonly missed in a rapid wipe-down.
- 6
Hardware and final check
Operate every window and door through its full range. On multi-point locking systems, confirm all locking points engage with even resistance. Stiff points need lubrication; persistently stiff points after lubrication need adjustment by a specialist.
Check all drainage slots are clear after the wash. Recheck with a torch at a low angle - a slot that looked clear before washing may have collected debris from the frame wash.
Dry all hardware surfaces. On EgoKiefer sliding systems, dry the track channel after cleaning and before closing the door - water left in the track channel freezes in Swiss winters and damages the threshold seal.
Pro Tips
- EgoKiefer PVC frame corners are welded at the factory to Swiss quality standards - they are precise and the corner joint is tight. Check corners carefully for grime accumulation that standard wipe-down misses.
- Minergie-specification windows have a noticeably different close feel from standard European windows - the multi-stage seal compression resistance when closing the sash is distinctive. If this feel has changed since the last visit, flag it to the owner.
- On Ego Classic installations in Swiss mountain locations (high UV, temperature extremes), the aluminium outer face may show surface oxidation faster than in lowland urban locations - annual aluminium restorer treatment is worthwhile.
- EgoKiefer drainage slots are sized for Swiss condensate volumes - they are slightly larger than standard European drainage slots. This means they can accept slightly larger debris. A soft brush clears them faster than a cocktail stick.
- Swiss hard water (particularly in alpine areas) leaves very visible mineral deposits on aluminium frame faces. An aluminium-safe limescale remover used quarterly on hard-water sites prevents significant build-up.
- On EgoKiefer sliding systems in alpine locations, the track channel freezes in winter if water is left in it. Always dry the track after cleaning regardless of the season.
- Multi-stage seals on EgoKiefer premium series compress significantly when the sash is closed. If you clean the seal in the open position, the seal face you clean is larger than the area that compresses against the outer frame - clean the full exposed seal face, not just the visible tip.
What NOT To Do
- No bleach, solvent, or ammonia-based products near EgoKiefer multi-stage seals - three seal lines means three times the exposure risk.
- No acid or concentrated alkali cleaners on aluminium Ego Alu or Ego Classic outer faces.
- No abrasive pads on any EgoKiefer frame surface - PVC, timber-alu, or aluminium.
- Do not leave water in Ego Comfort sliding system track channels in temperatures below zero.
- Do not force stiff multi-point locking hardware - dry lubrication and persistent stiffness after lubrication means specialist adjustment is needed.

Ego Classic timber inner faces need an annual inspection by a joinery specialist.). Drainage slots: Every clean (Swiss condensate volumes make this more critical than in milder climates.). Hardware lubrication: Once per year (All moving points. Multi-point locking systems need all points checked individually.)
Frequently Asked Questions
Field Notes
βEgoKiefer installations in Swiss residential buildings are typically found in well-maintained properties where the owner has high expectations of service quality - the cleaning result and the condition report both matter. The multi-stage seal system on EgoKiefer premium series is the most important thing to protect during cleaning and the most useful thing to monitor during each visit. Seal condition tells you more about window health than any other single indicator. Ego Classic timber-alu installations in Swiss mountain resorts are exposed to some of the harshest weather conditions in Central Europe - UV intensity at altitude, freeze-thaw cycles, and heavy snow load. The maintenance interval on these installations should be shorter than on lowland urban installations.β
