Why This System

Four material systems under one brand - uPVC, aluminium, wood, and wood/aluminium each have different cleaning requirements. Aluminium surfaces corrode if neglected - Drutex warns that atmospheric deposits attack unprotected surfaces. Wooden frames have protective coatings that degrade if dirt is left on the surface. Precision EPDM gaskets (two or three depending on range) and engineered drainage need gentle care, not high-pressure water. Glazing ranges from standard double to four-pane krypton-filled units achieving Ug 0.3 W/(m2K) - each configuration handles differently under the squeegee.

Step 1 of 2: Manufacturer Recommendations

Official Care Guidance

Source: DRUTEX OFFICIAL CARE AND MAINTENANCE DOCUMENTATION

Glass

  • Clean with lukewarm water and a mild washing substance.
  • Use a soft cloth only.
  • No abrasive substances on the glass surface.
  • No solvents or acid-based products.

uPVC Frames (IGLO series)

  • Clean with mild washing substances that have degreasing properties.
  • Cleaning materials must not contain abrasive substances or chemicals that dissolve or infiltrate into PVC.
  • No washing powders.
  • No acids or acid-based substances.
  • No solvents.
  • No abrasive materials - they cause surface tarnish and micro holes in the PVC.

Aluminium Frames (MB series)

  • Remove all dirt and dust regularly - aluminium is vulnerable to atmospheric deposits and fumes.
  • Lightly soiled surfaces: soft cloth with mild washing substances.
  • Heavily soiled surfaces: use special cleaning materials designed for aluminium.
  • Car body maintenance materials are acceptable for aluminium frames.
  • No washing powders, acids, solvents, or abrasive materials.

Wood Frames (SOFTLINE, DUOLINE)

  • Clean regularly with a dedicated cleaning kit.
  • The kit should infiltrate deep into the wood, dry quickly, and be dilutable with water.
  • Regular cleaning prolongs the life of the protective coating and delays renovation.
  • Dirt left on the surface damages protective coats over time.

Hardware and Seals

  • Clean and lubricate all moving parts at least once per year.
  • Use only dedicated products that do not affect the anti-corrosion coating.
  • Lubricate all moving parts of the lock with petroleum jellies at least once per year.
  • Apply silicon resin-based products to seal surfaces for atmospheric protection and freeze resistance.
  • Verify secure assembly of all safety-critical elements.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Drutex windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Drutex systems.

Pro Tools

My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.

1T-bar applicator with microfibre cover
2Professional squeegee with a fresh rubber blade
3Bucket with lukewarm water and one drop of mild washing-up liquid per litre
4100% cotton towelling rags for edge detailing
5Soft microfibre cloth for the frame surfaces
6Dedicated wood cleaning kit for SOFTLINE and DUOLINE frames (if applicable)

Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every Drutex installation.

  1. 1

Detail the frame before touching the glass

Before touching the glass, wipe down the window frame edges with a microfibre cloth dampened in mild soap water. This removes the dust, pollen, and atmospheric deposits sitting on the frame surface.

When you run the squeegee across the glass, the rubber edge makes contact with the frame. If there is dirt on that frame, the squeegee picks it up and drags it across the clean glass as a streak. Clean the frame first. Every time.

On aluminium Drutex frames, use only mild soap water - no solvents, no acids. On wooden SOFTLINE or DUOLINE frames, use the dedicated cleaning kit Drutex recommends.

  2. 2

    Agitation

Dip your T-bar applicator completely into the soap water on both sides. Apply the solution across the whole glass area using up-and-down or side-to-side motions. The goal is to dissolve the dirt, ready for the squeegee to shave away.

If the dirt is not fully dissolved, the remaining dirt gets transported over the squeegee, leaving smudges or smears. Take your time. Never clean in direct sunlight.

  3. 3

Detail the frame edge again before squeegeeing

Once the glass is agitated, run a dry corner of your cotton rag along the top edge and both side edges. This removes pooled soap water from the frame so the squeegee will not pick up dirty residue.

  4. 4

    The three squeegee turns

Side to side: start at the very top edge with a dry rubber. Work across in a straight horizontal line. Tilt at a slight angle so soap water spills from only one side. Wipe dry after each line. Overlap slightly.

Top to bottom: same principle in vertical lines. Start in the top corner with a dry rubber. Tilt to direct water to the lower side. Wipe dry after each line.

The J tune (continuous motion): from the top to the bottom in one endless, smooth movement. Your thumb guides the rotation. When this is in your muscle memory, it is the fastest and most consistent turn for any window size.

For Drutex's larger aluminium configurations (MB-86N, MB-79N), use the top-to-bottom turn with a pole first for the upper section, then finish the lower section with the side-to-side turn at arm height.

  5. 5

    Final edge detailing

After squeegeeing, take a dry cotton rag, fold it to a clean corner, and detail the bottom edge and sides in one smooth pass.

Get your finger into the edge where the glass meets the frame seal. Remove any pooled soap water. If left to dry, it leaves a residue mark in direct sunlight.

Rotate the rag so you are only ever touching the glass with a clean, dry section.

Pro Tips

  • Identify the material system before you start - IGLO (uPVC), MB (aluminium), SOFTLINE (wood), or DUOLINE (wood/aluminium). Each needs different frame care.
  • Clean the frame first, every time. Most streaks come from dirt the squeegee picks up at the frame edge.
  • On aluminium MB series frames, regular cleaning is corrosion prevention - do not skip it.
  • On wooden frames, use the dedicated cleaning kit Drutex recommends - it penetrates the wood without harming the protective coating.
  • On four-pane krypton-filled units, let the squeegee glide rather than pressing into the glass - these are the heaviest units in the range.

What NOT To Do

  • No solvents on any Drutex surface - uPVC, aluminium, wood, or glass.
  • No acids or acid-based substances on any Drutex surface.
  • No abrasive materials, scouring powder, or stiff brushes on frames or glass.
  • No washing powders on uPVC or aluminium frames.
  • No chemicals that dissolve or infiltrate into PVC on IGLO series frames.
  • No products that cause surface tarnish or micro holes on uPVC.
  • No high-pressure water directed at frame joints, drainage channels, or hardware.
  • Do not lubricate hardware with products that affect the anti-corrosion coating.
  • Do not leave dirt on wooden frame surfaces - it damages protective coats over time.
  • Do not clean glass in direct sunlight - the soap water dries before you can squeegee it off, baking residue onto the surface.
