Why This System

Fibrex composite is the defining Andersen material. It is harder than standard uPVC, more resistant to staining, and will not rot or require repainting - but it is not impervious to harsh chemical cleaners. The composite surface can be dulled by solvent-based products, even ones that do not visibly damage uPVC. Use pH-neutral, solvent-free cleaning products on all Fibrex surfaces. The 400 Series wood interior means the inside face of the frame is painted or stained wood. Any water that runs onto the interior frame surface during cleaning needs to be wiped dry immediately. Wood interiors do not tolerate repeated moisture exposure the way vinyl and composite exteriors do. E-Series aluminium-clad windows have a different maintenance requirement from Fibrex products. The aluminium cladding can be powder-coated or anodised - confirm before using any frame cleaning product. Andersen operates at every price point from entry vinyl to custom aluminium-clad wood. Identify which product family you are working on before selecting your approach.

The Orloffs Protocol

Pro Tips

  • On 400 Series double-hung windows, clean the upper sash by tilting it inward - Andersen tilt-wash hardware is designed for this. Tilt both sashes in sequence, clean both faces, return them carefully. Forcing the tilt mechanism damages the pivot bar.
  • Andersen screens use a grey fiberglass mesh on most residential products. Remove screens before cleaning glass - do not clean through the screen. Stack screens in order so they go back in the same window.
  • On Renewal by Andersen installs, check that the nailing fin is properly flashed at the perimeter on first visit. Water infiltration at poorly flashed replacement window installs appears first as paint staining on the interior trim below the window.

What NOT To Do

  • Do not use solvent-based, citrus oil, or alkaline cleaning products on Fibrex composite frames
  • Do not use abrasive pads or steel wool on any Andersen surface - composite, vinyl, aluminium, or glass
  • Do not allow water to pool on wood interior surfaces of 400 Series windows
  • Do not use alkaline cleaners on E-Series anodised aluminium cladding
  • Do not apply cleaning solution directly to hardware mechanisms
  • Do not confuse 100 Series vinyl frames with Fibrex composite - they look similar but vinyl can tolerate slightly more aggressive cleaning

Field Notes

β€œThe 400 Series is by far the most common Andersen product encountered on US residential cleaning rounds. Learn it thoroughly - the Fibrex exterior, wood interior combination is the characteristic to watch for. Renewal by Andersen replacement windows are installed in older homes where the original windows have been removed. The installation quality varies significantly - check the flashing and sill condition on Renewal installs and document anything that looks like water ingress risk. In northern US climates (Minnesota, Wisconsin, New England), Andersen windows with wood interiors can show condensation staining on the wood interior in winter. This is a ventilation and humidity issue in the home, not a cleaning problem - note it and communicate it to the homeowner rather than attempting to clean it away. E-Series windows on high-end residential projects in sunbelt states often have specialist glass coatings - solar control or anti-reflective. Ask about coatings on first-visit premium properties.”
