Why This System

Lima's coastal desert climate is the defining maintenance context for Alusa Peru profiles. Almost zero annual rainfall means glass and frame surfaces are never naturally rain-cleaned. Humboldt current humidity creates a persistent moisture film that bonds particulate to surfaces. The result is a slow-accumulating, firmly bonded grime layer that builds faster than the self-cleaning action of rainfall removes it. Lima's coastal particulate includes mineral dust from the Andes, Pacific sea salt from the Humboldt current, and urban pollution from one of South America's most traffic-dense cities. This is a complex, chemically diverse grime that requires proper pre-rinsing and pH-neutral chemistry. Peru's Andean interior cities (Arequipa, Cusco) face radically different conditions - high altitude UV, seasonal rainfall (October to April), and cold nights. Alusa Peru profiles installed at altitude need altitude-adapted protocols.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Alusa Peru windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Alusa Peru systems.

Pro Tools

My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.

1pH-neutral concentrate
2Pure water pre-rinse container
3Fresh squeegee rubber

Pro Tips

  • In Lima, replace squeegee rubber more frequently than in rainfall-climate markets - the abrasive particulate in Lima grime wears the rubber edge faster and a worn edge leaves residue on every stroke
  • During the garua season (April to October), the morning fog in Lima can re-deposit a fine salt film on glass within hours of cleaning on west-facing elevations - flag this to clients and set realistic expectations for how long cleaned glass stays clean in Lima winter

What NOT To Do

  • Do not skip pre-rinsing in Lima - dry squeegeeing over Lima particulate scratches glass
  • Do not use abrasive pads on aluminium or PVC profiles
  • Do not use solvent-based cleaners on PVC profiles
  • Do not clean outdoors in Andean Peru during afternoon electrical storms (October to April)
  • Do not use acid cleaners near aluminium frames

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean Alusa Peru windows?
For Alusa Peru windows, we recommend cleaning twice a year depending on your local environment. Coastal or urban locations may need more frequent cleaning.
What tools do I need for Alusa Peru windows?
Professional cleaning of Alusa Peru windows requires my daily tool list of: pH-neutral concentrate, Pure water pre-rinse container, Fresh squeegee rubber.
What should I avoid on Alusa Peru windows?
Do not skip pre-rinsing in Lima - dry squeegeeing over Lima particulate scratches glass
Does Alusa Peru publish an official cleaning guide?
Alusa Peru has not published an official cleaning guide. The protocol on this page is based on Justin Orloff's 25 years hands-on experience.
Can I use a water-fed pole on Alusa Peru windows?
Yes, purified water via a water-fed pole is one of the safest methods for Alusa Peru glass. Ensure TDS is at or near zero before use and avoid directing high-pressure water at seals or gaskets.

Field Notes

โ€œLima cleaning frequency should be higher than in Santiago or Buenos Aires despite the low rainfall. Absence of rain means grime accumulates without any self-cleaning. 4 to 6 week maximum between cleans for exposed Lima residential positions. The garua (Lima winter fog, April to October) deposits a salt-humidity film on glass and frames that is chemically aggressive on powder coat over time. This film is invisible when dry but causes chalking on frames facing the Pacific over multi-year periods. In Arequipa, the white volcanic particulate (sillar dust) from local construction and wind is fine and abrasive. Pre-rinse before any squeegee contact with glass is non-negotiable in Arequipa.โ€
