Why This System

Chile's extreme climate variability from north to south creates the widest range of installation conditions for any single-country profile supplier in South America. Atacama desert installations face UV levels among the highest on Earth. Central Santiago installations have a Mediterranean dry summer and moderate wet winter. Southern Chile (Valdivia, Puerto Montt) has some of the highest annual rainfall in the world. Chilean fabricators using Alusa profiles produce windows that span this full climate range. The profile material is the same. The installation environment is radically different. Santiago is Chile's dominant residential market. Mediterranean climate means dry summer (November to March) with low mould risk, and wet winter (April to October) with drainage challenges. This is different from the tropical mould-focused protocols required in Brazil.

Step 2 of 2: The Orloffs Protocol

The Orloffs Protocol

This is how I clean Alusa Chile windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for Alusa Chile systems.

Pro Tools

My daily tool list. This is what I carry to every job.

Pro Tips

  • In Santiago, shift the protocol seasonally - mould and seal focus in winter, dust and pre-rinse focus in summer
  • In northern Chile, use UV-stable pH-neutral products - extreme Atacama UV can degrade standard cleaning product residue on frame surfaces faster than in any other South American market

What NOT To Do

  • Do not use abrasive pads on aluminium or PVC profiles
  • Do not use solvent-based cleaners on PVC
  • Do not use acid cleaners near aluminium frames
  • Do not skip weep hole inspection in southern Chile installations

Field Notes

โ€œSantiago summer (November to March) is dry and dusty - pre-rinsing glass before cleaning reduces the risk of grinding dry dust into the glass surface. Southern Chile installations (Valdivia south) may show moss and algae growth on sheltered frame surfaces year-round. Gentle brush removal with pH-neutral solution at each visit keeps this manageable. Northern Chile Atacama installations: UV is extreme, rainfall is almost zero, and dust is the primary maintenance challenge. Consider increasing frame inspection frequency for UV chalking - Atacama UV is among the highest measured anywhere in the world.โ€
